Law enforcement procession honors Lompoc officer battling cancer

Officer Yobanie Martinez was escorted home by agencies across the Central Coast after a cancer diagnosis earlier this year.
Law enforcement agencies across the Central Coast came together Tuesday to honor Lompoc Police Officer Yobanie Martinez, who is battling cancer following a diagnosis earlier this year. A procession involving Lompoc police, CHP, Arroyo Grande police, San Luis Obispo police, and Santa Maria police transported Martinez from the hospital back to his home in Santa Maria late Tuesday afternoon.
The vehicles were visible along Highway 101 between San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria. Lompoc Police Chief Kevin Martin said his staff wanted to honor Martinez, who has been with the Lompoc Police Department for about three years. Martinez's wife also took part in the procession.
Community shows support
Residents gathered along the route to show their support. Nipomo resident Jami Scherrer and her son stood on the Tefft Street overpass during the procession. She said she wanted Martinez to know he is supported through the law enforcement family.
Martinez was honored earlier this year by Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his commitment to keeping the community safe through DUI enforcement. He also received the Above and Beyond Life Saving Award at the recent Lompoc Police Department Awards Banquet. For more local news, visit our news page.
