Judge Denies Motions in Lompoc Councilman Bridge Case

A judge ruled Thursday that criminal charges against Councilman Steve Bridge will proceed and the case will remain in Lompoc.

Lompoc City Councilman Steve Bridge will continue to face criminal charges after a judge denied motions from both sides on Thursday. Judge Juan Higuera ruled that the 25 counts against Bridge will proceed and that the case will remain in Lompoc rather than transfer to Santa Barbara.

The charges stem from paperwork Bridge submitted for city rebate programs for lighting efficiency and water leak repairs. Prosecutors allege he used a contracting firm name and license number belonging to an out-of-town inactive company that matched his stepson's name. The charges include felonies for forgery, grand theft, misappropriation of public funds, and fraudulent use of a contractor's license, plus five misdemeanors.

Defense and Prosecution Arguments

Defense attorney Michael Scott argued the charges lacked probable cause and that Bridge did not intend to defraud the city, noting the work was completed and his stepson was paid. Senior Deputy District Attorney Brian Cota countered that Bridge intentionally defrauded the city, citing Bridge's own statement that he needed a receipt to document the work, so he created one.

Cota had requested the case move to Santa Barbara, arguing that public statements by Bridge and former Mayor Jim Mosby during council meetings could make jury selection difficult in North County. Scott opposed the transfer, calling it inconvenient for witnesses and his client. Judge Higuera found no good cause for the transfer but said the request could be revisited if issues arise during jury selection.

Bridge was elected to the council in November 2024 representing northern Lompoc. The case returns to court on January 11. For more on local news, visit our news page.
