Best Wineries Near Lompoc for a Day Trip

Beyond the Wine Ghetto, Lompoc is surrounded by remarkable estate wineries in the Santa Rita Hills. Here's how to plan the perfect day trip.

The Santa Rita Hills wine route connects Lompoc to Buellton through one of California's most scenic and critically acclaimed wine corridors. Estate wineries here range from historic adobes to modern barn tasting rooms, and the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay produced in this appellation consistently rank among California's finest.

The Santa Rita Hills AVA

Designated as an American Viticultural Area in 2001, the Santa Rita Hills is a roughly east-west oriented valley that funnels cold ocean air from the Pacific through a gap near Point Conception. This marine influence creates unusually cool conditions for California viticulture — summer high temperatures often 20–25°F below Napa — which slows grape ripening, builds complexity, and retains the natural acidity that makes these wines so food-friendly.

Sanford Winery

Sanford is one of the pioneering estates of the Santa Rita Hills, established in 1981 when the appellation didn't yet officially exist. The adobe tasting room is one of the most beautiful in California — thick walls, a courtyard with roses, and a view of the surrounding vineyard. The estate Pinot Noir from La Rinconada Vineyard is a benchmark.

Melville Vineyards

Melville's barn-style tasting room in the heart of the Santa Rita Hills corridor offers tastings in a warm, well-designed space with views of the surrounding vines. The portfolio spans Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, with consistent quality across the lineup. The Estate Syrah is particularly notable — complex and peppery in a style closer to Northern Rhône than Napa.

Sea Smoke Cellars

Sea Smoke is one of the appellation's most celebrated producers, with wines that routinely appear on best-of lists nationally. Tasting is by appointment and access is somewhat limited, but for serious Pinot enthusiasts the appointment is worth making. The vineyard, planted to Dijon clones on a hillside above the valley floor, produces wines of exceptional concentration and longevity.

Babcock Winery

Babcock is a long-established estate offering a broader portfolio than most Santa Rita Hills producers — including Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Pinot Gris alongside the expected Pinot Noir. The winery has a casual, accessible tasting room and frequently runs events and winemaker dinners.

Route Planning

The standard Santa Rita Hills wine route starts in Lompoc, heads east on Highway 246 through the valley, and ends in Buellton (where the Sideways movie put Los Olivos on the wine map). Budget a full day: two or three estate visits, a winery picnic, and a return through the foothills as the light changes in late afternoon.
