Lompoc Theater renovation enters Phase 2 with demolition and drainage work underway

Construction crews are working on demolition and excavation at the historic Lompoc Theater as Phase 2 of the $18.9 million renovation continues. Workers are removing part of the building to make room for a courtyard and preparing for drainage improvements.

Mark Herrier, Executive Director of the Lompoc Theater Project, says crews are digging now to stay ahead of winter weather. Site supervisor Shawn Johnson says the team has a stormwater prevention plan in place using straw wattles and other measures to prevent runoff from damaging the site.

STEM Classroom and New Spaces Planned

The project includes more than theater renovations. Plans call for a new land office building with a cinema boutique and an educational space. The educational area is expected to become a STEM classroom for fifth- and sixth-grade students in the Lompoc Unified School District, where students will learn about robotics. The project also includes modular buildings, new dressing rooms, restrooms, and the courtyard.

Residents could see visible progress this month as crews work to move part of the historic building back to its original location from 130 years ago. The courtyard and other additions could begin taking shape early next year, depending on weather and construction progress. The team hopes to complete Phase 2 by spring 2027, in time for the theater's 100th anniversary. The STEM classroom and land office are expected to open in fall 2027.

Phase 3 of the project still needs approximately $5 million in funding to move forward. Learn more about Lompoc news and updates at /news.
