Burton Mesa Ecological Reserve

Between Lompoc and Vandenberg Village sits several thousand acres of protected chaparral — sandy soil, low twisted oak, manzanita, and a network of trails that hardly anyone outside the neighborhoods bordering it uses. Burton Mesa chaparral is a rare plant community that grows in very few places on earth, and this reserve exists specifically to protect it. What that means on the ground is quiet, level-ish walking through dense low forest with the occasional opening onto a wide view. It's managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, so it's undeveloped by design: no restrooms, no kiosks, just trailheads off the surrounding streets.
