Set an alarm for Friday night: SpaceX is scheduled to launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base carrying the Starlink Group 15-20 batch of satellites. The launch window opens at 12:25 AM PDT on Saturday, August 22 — which, for those of us staying up for it, means late Friday night.
If it feels like the pace is picking up, it is. Another Starlink mission flew Tuesday night at 9:01 PM, and the next one after Friday's is already on the board: Starlink 15-22, set for the early morning of Tuesday, August 25, at 2:42 AM. Three launches in one stretch of August is becoming the new normal out here.
How to watch from town
One of the best things about living in Lompoc is that you don't need a viewing pass or a special spot — any west-facing street works. Step outside a few minutes before the window opens and look toward the base. Night launches are the showstoppers: the exhaust plume lights up the whole sky, and on clear nights you can track the rocket for minutes as it arcs over the Pacific.
