Vandenberg beaches reopen Sept. 11 after plover nesting season
Surf, Wall, and Minuteman beaches will reopen early after all western snowy plover chicks have fledged.
Vandenberg Space Force Base will reopen its three beaches to the public on Sept. 11, several weeks earlier than usual, the base announced Thursday.
Surf, Wall, and Minuteman beaches are normally closed from March 1 through Sept. 30 to protect the western snowy plover during breeding season. This year, biological experts and the Space Launch Delta 30 Commander confirmed that all plover chicks have fledged, allowing the early reopening.
Rules still in effect
While the beaches will be open, visitors must follow guidelines to protect plover habitat. Pets must be on leash, and camping, littering, fireworks, and other disruptive activities are prohibited.
The western snowy plover is an endangered species that nests along the coast. During nesting season, signage and fencing block public access to give the birds space to raise their young.
