Friday Night Lights: Lompoc and Cabrillo Kick Off 2026

The Braves are rebuilding, the Conqs are hungry, and the whole town shows up on Friday nights. A look at both squads before the season starts.
The best free show in Lompoc is almost back. High school football season is nearly here, and this week's preview coverage gives us a first look at both of the town's programs heading into 2026.
Lompoc High: reloading, not panicking
The Braves graduated a large senior class, and this year is openly a rebuilding one — plenty of new faces will be asked to fill big shoes. But rebuilding years at Lompoc High have a way of going better than expected, and there was already an early bright spot: a junior running back turned heads at Thursday's scrimmage, bolting through a big hole on the very first play. If the line can keep opening holes like that, the Braves' identity will sort itself out fast.
Cabrillo High: small roster, big chip
Across town, Cabrillo is working with a smaller roster — and carrying the kind of edge that comes with it. The Conqs are eager to prove what they can do, and thin-numbered teams often play with more cohesion than deep ones: everybody plays, everybody matters, and nobody takes a snap off.
Two programs, one town
Here's the thing about football in Lompoc: it isn't really about the win column. It's about the parking lot filling up an hour early, the snack bar line, half the town on the home side, and kids you've watched grow up playing under the lights. Whether you bleed Braves blue or Conqs colors — or you just like a good Friday night out — both stadiums are worth your time this fall.
Make it a full Friday
Game nights are a good excuse to make an evening of it — grab dinner in town beforehand at one of the spots in our local directory, or check the deals feed for a pre-game special. As kickoff dates and times firm up, we'll list game nights alongside everything else happening in town on our events page, so you can plan your Fridays in one place.
The season starts soon. Dust off the stadium blanket.
