Coastal Cleanup Day Comes to Lompoc Beaches Sept. 19

Santa Barbara County's Coastal Cleanup Day runs 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 19 — and Lompoc's stretch of coast is on the list.
Mark the calendar: Santa Barbara County's Coastal Cleanup Day is set for Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, and the public is invited. The county-wide effort, organized with Explore Ecology, will send volunteers to sites across the county — including the Lompoc area and the Gaviota coast.
Our beaches, our morning
Lompoc is luckier than most towns when it comes to coastline. Ocean Beach, Surf Beach, and Jalama are the kind of wild, uncrowded shores that people drive hours to visit — and they collect their share of what the ocean and the wind drop off. Three hours of picking up debris alongside your neighbors is one of the most direct ways there is to take care of a place you love.
It's also a genuinely good morning out. Cleanup days tend to draw a friendly crowd — families, school groups, longtime beach regulars — and there's a quiet satisfaction in looking back down a stretch of sand you just cleared. Bring the kids, too: young volunteers tend to be the sharpest-eyed debris spotters on the beach, and the lesson sticks better than any classroom version.
Make a full Saturday of it
You'll be done by noon, salty and hungry, which sets up the rest of the day nicely. Head back into town for lunch at one of the spots in our local directory, then keep the outdoor streak going with any of the activities on our list — La Purisima's trails, the murals downtown, or just a slow drive back along the coast you spent the morning taking care of.
Details to watch
Specific Lompoc-area site assignments and check-in details will come from the county and Explore Ecology as the date gets closer — we'll share them on our events page when they land. For now, all you need to do is save the date: September 19, 9 a.m. to noon, boots and gloves optional but encouraged.
The coast takes care of Lompoc all year — surf days, whale watching, camping trips, that first glimpse of water at the end of Ocean Avenue. One Saturday morning a year, we return the favor.
