Cabrillo High School Lands $5K Grant, Eyes Long-Awaited Home Stadium
T-Mobile's grant helps with rising costs as the school pushes toward its $1.4 million stadium goal after 61 years without a true home field.
Cabrillo High School in Vandenberg Village has received a $5,000 grant from T-Mobile through its Friday Night 5G Lights program, which supports high school football in smaller communities. It's the third time the school has earned the grant, and Athletic Director Derek Wong says the money comes at a critical time as equipment costs climb with inflation.
While the grant helps cover immediate expenses, Cabrillo's bigger dream is finally having a stadium of its own. In 61 years, the school has hosted only three or four football games on its own campus. Most home games are played at Lompoc High School's field, and students practice on a rough field with gopher holes and uneven grass that raises injury concerns.
Community Rallies for $1.4 Million Goal
Former students and staff are now leading the charge. Julia Garmendia, a Cabrillo graduate who teaches at the school, says the community has been inching closer to the goal for years. The Cabrillo Athletic Field and Track fundraising committee is working toward a $500,000 milestone on the way to raising $1.4 million total for a synthetic-turf field and seven-lane all-weather track.
