Westvale Park playground upgrades planned for spring 2027

Westvale Park is getting a major playground upgrade. The city has identified the area as needing more high-quality recreational opportunities for children and families, and plans call for new slides, swings, and additional play areas to replace the current setup of five swings, monkey bars, and a few benches.

The project is estimated to cost about $185,000 and would be funded through Community Development Block Grant funds, pending approval and applicable requirements. The playground is also being proposed as a National Demonstration Site, which would incorporate research-based practices into the design.

Neighbors hopeful after years of waiting

Residents who live near the park say it has been overlooked for years. Walter Perkins, who has lived across from Westvale Park for more than 40 years, remembers when the space had beautiful scenery, many trees, barbecue pits, and toys for kids. Iona Blunt, who lives behind the park, said other parks in Lompoc are beautiful but Westvale seems forgotten.

The new playground is giving neighbors hope for the future. Some residents also emphasized that regular maintenance will be important once the upgrades are complete. The city says the new playground is expected to be finished by spring 2027.
