Organic Soup Kitchen Launches Meal Delivery for Lompoc's Medically Vulnerable Residents

A Santa Barbara nonprofit is bringing medically tailored meals to Lompoc residents with chronic illness, filling a gap after more than 50 local requests.
Organic Soup Kitchen, a Santa Barbara nonprofit, announced this week it is launching meal delivery service in Lompoc for residents living with serious chronic illness. The program will provide dietitian-reviewed, condition-specific meals delivered directly to homes of people too ill to shop and cook independently.
For more than a year, OSK received over 50 calls, emails, and applications from Lompoc-area residents with cancer, heart disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and other conditions who had heard about the program in Santa Barbara. Until now, geography prevented the nonprofit from serving them. Enrollment began September 18th, with deliveries starting in October.
Partnership with Medical Center and DoorDash
Working with Lompoc Valley Medical Center, OSK finalized logistics for weekly delivery. Client orders will be driven north and distributed through a partnership with DoorDash. Anthony Carroccio, Executive Director of Organic Soup Kitchen, said Lompoc has been on their radar since launching the Medically Tailored Meal program, and the organization spent time ensuring they could do it right.
Among OSK's program participants surveyed, 75 percent with a history of emergency room visits showed measurable reduction after beginning the program. 91 percent reported improved physical health, 87 percent reported improved mental health, and 93 percent reported reduced food-related financial stress. Nearly three-quarters of members had previously been forced to choose between buying food and paying for medication or rent.
