April Villarreal, a clinical laboratory scientist at Lompoc Valley Medical Center, has been selected as a 2026 SoCal Hospital Hero by the Hospital Association of Southern California. The annual awards recognize hospital workers who make a positive impact on patients, coworkers, and their communities.
Villarreal started at LVMC six years ago as a medical laboratory technician. While working full time and raising a family, she continued her education and advanced to clinical laboratory scientist. She then created an advancement program at LVMC to help medical laboratory technicians move into clinical laboratory scientist roles. After receiving approval from hospital administration, the program is now helping two more LVMC employees work toward career advancement.
Building Culture and Mentoring Staff
Three years ago, Villarreal helped launch LVMC's BEE Award, which stands for BEE-yond Exceptional Experience. The staff recognition program honors nonclinical employees who consistently go above and beyond. She volunteers at hospital events, participates on committees that plan staff celebrations, and works to make sure employees feel valued and appreciated.
Beyond the hospital, Villarreal serves as a volunteer trustee of the Lompoc Hospital District Foundation. She visits career fairs and classrooms to encourage students to explore healthcare careers in the Lompoc Valley. Villarreal will be recognized with other recipients at the fourth annual My SoCal Hospital Heroes Award Gala in November.
