Lompoc Council Motion to Censure Councilman Stephen Bridge Fails in 2-2 Tie Vote

The Lompoc City Council's motion to censure Councilman Stephen Bridge failed Tuesday night after a 2-2 tie vote, prompting audience members to shout "shame" as they left City Hall. Bridge faces 25 criminal charges alleging he stole public money through city-operated rebate programs for lighting efficiency and water leak repairs.

Councilmember Jeremy Ball, who brought forward the censure resolution, said the action would help restore public trust by showing the council's disapproval of the allegations. Ball read comments Bridge made to an investigator about using an inactive contractor's license on a rebate application, in which Bridge said "so I ginned that thing up" and admitted it might seem "probably a little shady." Bridge responded that his words were taken out of context.

Council Divided on Standards

Mayor Jim Mosby backed Bridge and questioned city staff review procedures for the rebate programs. Mosby and Councilmember Dirk Starbuck voted against the censure, while Ball and Councilmember Victor Vega voted in favor. Bridge abstained from voting. The 2-2 tie meant the motion failed.

In a nine-minute statement, Bridge claimed he became targeted for asking staff questions and opposing general taxes. He said the criminal allegations caused him to lose his job at Vandenberg Space Force Base and required using retirement funds. Bridge has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
