Jalama Beach County Park: The Complete Guide

January 12, 2026Lompoc Locals Team

Jalama Beach is one of the most remote and beautiful beaches in California. Here's everything you need to know to visit, camp, and survive the wind.

Jalama Beach County Park is 14 miles from Highway 1 down a narrow ranch road, and that inaccessibility is its most important feature. The drive keeps casual visitors out and rewards those who make the commitment with one of the most genuinely remote beach experiences available within a three-hour drive of Los Angeles.

Getting There

From Lompoc, take Highway 1 north to Jalama Road. Turn west and follow Jalama Road 14 miles through Rancho Jalama, a working cattle ranch. The road is paved but narrow — two cars passing requires slowing down. The final mile is dramatic: you drop through a final canyon and the Pacific appears suddenly ahead. There's no cell service for most of the drive.

The Beach

Jalama is a classic Northern California-style beach in Southern California — wide gravel-and-sand strand, powerful surf, cold water, constant wind, kelp wrack at the tideline, and sea stacks breaking the horizon. The Channel Islands are visible on clear days. The beach extends north and south from the campground, with the north section (toward the Vandenberg boundary) being less visited and more dramatic.

Camping

Jalama offers tent, RV, and some cabin camping directly adjacent to the beach. The campground is small and popular — reservations open months in advance and fill quickly for summer weekends. Weekday visits are more accessible. The campground has flush toilets, hot showers, and a store. Campsites exposed to the prevailing northwest wind can make sleep challenging; request sites with windbreak coverage if possible.

The Jalama Burger

The Jalama Beach Store and Grill serves the legendary Jalama Burger — a half-pound beef patty with standard toppings, cooked on a flat-top grill and eaten at an outdoor picnic table with the Pacific in front of you. By any objective measure it's a good but not extraordinary burger. By the measure of context — the 14-mile drive, the wind, the seals, the remote beauty of the place — it's among the best meals in California.

Surfing

Jalama is a genuine surfing beach with consistent swell from the northwest and occasionally excellent conditions. The wave quality is intermediate to advanced — the shore break is punishing and the currents are strong. For experienced surfers, the relative lack of crowd is an unusual California luxury. No rentals available on-site; bring your own equipment.

Wildlife

Jalama has excellent wildlife viewing: harbor seals on the rocks north of the campground, shore birds in the wrack line, hawks and falcons on the cliffs, and occasional gray whale sightings during winter migration (December–April). The tidepools at the north end of the beach expose excellent invertebrate habitat at low tide.

Practical Notes

- Wind is constant and strong. Bring windproof layers and a stake-able shelter. - Water is available at the campground; pack in everything else. - No ATM. The store accepts cash and cards but don't rely on connectivity. - Book camping reservations through the Santa Barbara County Parks reservation system months in advance for summer.
