Camping Near Lompoc: The Best Sites in Santa Barbara County

Lompoc is surrounded by excellent camping terrain — beachfront sites on the rugged Pacific, forest camps in the Los Padres National Forest, reservoir camping at Lake Cachuma, and county park options throughout the region. Here's an overview of the best options within a realistic drive.
Jalama Beach County Park
Jalama is the flagship camping destination closest to Lompoc — 14 miles via a narrow ranch road from Highway 1. The campground sits directly adjacent to the beach, with ocean views from many sites. Hot showers, flush toilets, and the on-site store and grill make it more comfortable than truly primitive camping, while the remote access keeps the crowds away. Book well in advance — summer weekends fill months out.
Ocean Beach County Park
Ocean Beach, closer to Lompoc and accessible from Point Sal Road, offers campground facilities with beach access and unobstructed views of Vandenberg launches. Less dramatic than Jalama but more accessible and with reliable availability outside peak summer weekends.
Los Padres National Forest
The Los Padres covers much of the backcountry east and south of Lompoc, including the San Rafael Wilderness — one of the most remote wilderness areas in Southern California. Dispersed camping is permitted in designated areas throughout the forest. Campfire permits are required in dry conditions. Lake Cachuma
Santa Barbara County's Lake Cachuma, 30 miles east of Lompoc on Highway 154, has a large county campground with tent, RV, and cabin options. The lake setting is scenic and the wildlife viewing is excellent — bald eagles winter on the reservoir. Fishing, boating, and kayaking are available.
Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area
In the hill country north of Solvang and accessible from the east side of the Santa Ynez Valley, Figueroa Mountain campgrounds offer pine forest camping at elevation above the coastal fog. These are more traditional forest camps and fill less rapidly than coastal options.

Santa Barbara County campgrounds book through the County Parks reservation system. Los Padres campgrounds use Recreation.gov. Book as early as the system allows for summer weekends. Midweek and shoulder season visits offer significantly better availability.
