Best Hiking Trails Near Lompoc, California

January 8, 2026Lompoc Locals Team

From chaparral ridge walks to creekside trails and mission footpaths, Lompoc's hiking options are surprisingly varied. Here's where to go.

The Lompoc Valley sits at the junction of two mountain ranges, a major river drainage, and a coastal plain — terrain diversity that translates directly into varied and interesting hiking. The hiking here isn't famous in the way Big Sur or Joshua Tree trails are, and that's precisely the point. You'll have these trails mostly to yourself.

La Purísima Mission State Historic Park — 25 Miles of Trails

The anchor of Lompoc-area hiking, La Purísima offers an extensive trail network that begins at the mission grounds and extends into the surrounding chaparral hills and creek drainages. The Huasna Creek Loop (approximately 4 miles) provides a good introduction — shaded creek sections, chaparral ridges, and views back over the valley. The longer Thorn Point Trail gains significant elevation and rewards with panoramic views on clear days. Spring wildflowers along these trails — particularly after wet winters — are outstanding.

Santa Ynez River Riparian Corridor

The river corridor trails east of Lompoc follow the Santa Ynez River through willow and cottonwood woodland, providing flat, shaded walking that's distinct from the surrounding chaparral. Birdwatching here is excellent — the riparian habitat supports a high diversity of species including warblers, vireos, and herons. Trail access points are scattered along the river road; conditions vary by season and water level.

Jalama Beach Coastal Access

The trail access at Jalama Beach County Park offers short coastal walks along dramatic Pacific bluffs. The terrain is rugged and the wind is almost constant, but the views of the Channel Islands on clear days are extraordinary. The beach itself extends north and south from the campground; the northern stretch toward the Vandenberg boundary is less visited and more dramatic.

Miguelito County Park

Located east of downtown Lompoc, Miguelito County Park provides accessible day-hiking trails through oak woodland and grassland — good family terrain with minimal elevation gain. The park is underused relative to its quality, making it a reliable choice for weekday walks.

Drum Canyon

The roads and fire tracks in Drum Canyon, east of town, provide unofficial hiking access (check current land management before going — some areas are on private land with varying access). The canyon is botanically interesting, with a mix of native and agricultural plants in transition, and the views back across the Lompoc Valley improve steadily with elevation gain.

Seasonal Considerations

Spring (February–May) is the prime hiking season near Lompoc — wildflowers are at peak, temperatures are mild, and the landscape is green. Summer brings marine fog and cooler temperatures than inland California, making midday hiking manageable. Fall is excellent with dry, clear conditions. Winter rains can close some trails; check before going.

Wear layers regardless of season — the marine influence means temperatures can drop 20°F between 10 AM and 4 PM even in summer.
