Allan Hancock College bond measure leads with 56% approval in early returns

Measure H, a $290 million bond for facility repairs and upgrades at Allan Hancock College, is ahead in early vote counts. The measure needs 55% to pass.

Voters in the Allan Hancock Joint Community College District are leaning toward approving Measure H, a $290 million bond measure for repairs and upgrades at Allan Hancock College. Early unofficial results show 16,839 votes in favor (56.28%) and 13,082 against (43.72%), with 0 of 114 precincts reporting. The measure requires 55% approval to pass.

If approved, Measure H will authorize the college district to issue bonds to address aging facilities, upgrade classrooms and laboratories, and improve career training spaces. Proposed projects include improvements to science, mathematics, nursing, welding, and machining programs. Funding would also support repairs to roofs, plumbing, and electrical systems, removal of hazardous materials, and upgrades to meet health, safety, and accessibility standards.

University Center Planned

The proposal includes plans for a university center to expand opportunities for students to pursue four-year bachelor's degrees locally through partnerships with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and CSU Channel Islands. Property owners would repay the bonds through property taxes at approximately $19 annually per $100,000 of assessed property value.

Allan Hancock College Superintendent Kevin G. Walthers said the college was encouraged by early results but noted that ballots are still being counted. He said the university center is key to supporting the local community with four-year degrees. Election results will be certified on December 3.
