La Purisima Mission State Historic Park
Most California missions you visit as a building. La Purisima you visit as a whole working world. Spread across roughly 2,000 acres off Purisima Road, it is one of the most completely rebuilt missions in the state, and you feel that the moment you walk in. The rooms are furnished. The gardens are planted. There are actual sheep, goats, and burros. You can stand in the workshops where the Chumash and the Spanish lived and labored in the early 1800s and picture the day-to-day of it. Bring shoes for the trails too, because about 25 miles of them wind out from the buildings into the hills. Wander it self-guided and give yourself real time. It rewards slowing down.
Wear real walking shoes and plan for at least a couple of hours. Mornings are cooler and the livestock are more active. The trails behind the compound are worth doing if the weather holds.
